Helen R. Spencer
Hartland, VT – Helen R. Spencer, 94, died Sunday July 10, 2011 at Brookside Nursing Home in White River Jct.
She was born July 8, 1917 in St. Albans, VT a daughter of Howard J. and Myrtle M. (Westover) Rooney. Helen lived in Sheldon Springs, VT until the age of twelve when her parents moved to Loveland, CO, where she graduated from High School. She returned east in 1936, settling in Richmond, VT for a time and was married to Stanley W. Spencer September 17, 1938 in Cambridge, VT. They made a home in Quechee where they spent many years and raised their family. Helen worked with special needs people at the Hartland Activities Center until her retirement in 1987. After retiring she moved to Hartland, VT where she has lived since. She has been a resident at Brookside Nursing home for the past eleven months and her family is very appreciative for their care as well as the care she received at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.
She enjoyed sewing, reading, walking and volunteering including her many hours at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in White River Jct. where she volunteered for ten years following her retirement.
She was predeceased by her husband Stanley in 1959 as well as two brothers Carleton and Howard Rooney, Jr.
She is survived by three sons James S. Spencer and wife Janice of Hartland, Dennis W. Spencer and wife Hope of Essex Jct., VT and Thomas D. Spencer and wife Dawn of Hartland; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; a brother Francis Rooney and wife Marion of Essex Jct.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., Tuesday from 6-8PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony's Church Wednesday July 13th at 10AM with burial following in the Hilltop Cemetery in Quechee.
