Helen (Grant) Sawyer, 97, died Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland, NH.
She was born January 21, 1923 in Swampscott, Massachusetts. She was adopted by Clarence and Elsie Grant and lived in Vershire, VT as a child. Helen attended school in Vershire and graduated from Thetford Academy in 1941 before attending the Lyndon Normal School. During World War II she worked at American Optical in Brattleboro and Cone Automatic in Windsor. In 1946 she married Ralph B. Sawyer, they settled down on a dairy farm in Thetford, VT. For the next many years Helen raised their family and helped on the farm. After the farm was sold Ralph and Helen operated a diner for a number of years, later she worked at Shopping International and Trillium in Norwich.
Ralph and Helen spent many winters in Florida and traveled around the country to see their kids. After Ralph passed away she continued to travel including trips to Hawaii, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Canada, The Panama Canal, Aruba and Curacao.
Helen was very generous with her time and enjoyed volunteering to help others. Mrs. Sawyer became a regular at the Bugbee Senior Center including helping with the Christmas Craft Fairs. She enjoyed dancing, bowling, puzzles, sewing and stamp collecting.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1985 and by Warren Bacon, a loving companion in later life.
She is survived by two sons, James and wife Sue of Florida and Bernard of Magnolia, Texas; a daughter Nancy Sawyer of Alstead, New Hampshire; granddaughter Holly and husband Chris, grandson Keith Grochowik and wife Jennifer; twin great grandkids, Anthony and Mackenzie Grochowik as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2PM on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., followed by committal prayers in the Evergreen Rest Cemetery in Thetford Center.
