Helen Mary Gassett

Weathersfield, VT – Helen Mary Gassett, 97, died Tuesday August 26, 2014 at home with her family in Weathersfield, VT.

She was born February 28, 1917 in Bristol, CT a daughter of Savery & Margaret (Swenson) Zigman. Her family moved to Vermont when she was young and she has spent almost all of her life as a resident of Weathersfield, attending schools in Weathersfield and Windsor. After school she worked at the shoe shop in Bellows Falls, VT; later at the Goodyear Rubber Company in Windsor and was married to Malcolm LaFlam in 1937. During World War II she took a job with the Army Air Corps at MIT in Boston. After the war she returned to Weathersfield where she raised her children and built two homes with her husband. After her children began school she worked at the Kim Mar Motel in Weathersfield and later the Merit Clothing Company in Claremont. Mr. LaFlam died in 1970 and she was later married to Wayland Gassett in 1973 until his death in 1981.

Mrs. Gassett loved flowers and enjoyed working with them in her garden. She was also very talented at crocheting and knitting and made many fancy pieces. She will be remembered as a very friendly person who was always willing to help when others needed it.

She was predeceased by her husbands; two sisters, Jane Ann Ransom and Gertrude Lemire and four brothers Raymond, Edward, Walter and Joseph Zigman.

She is survived by her son Darryl LaFlam and his wife Marjorie of Weathersfield, VT and David LaFlam of Vero Beach, FL; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a sister Florence Petrin of Charlestown, NH and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday August 30th at 10AM at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor with burial following in the St. Francis Cemetery, also in Windsor. All are welcome to join her family for a reception at the church following the funeral.
