IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Hazel G.
Slayton
March 7, 1936 – July 1, 2025
Hartland, VT- Hazel Goodrich Slayton, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 1, 2025. She leaves a legacy of compassion, dedication, and quiet strength. Born on March 7, 1936, in Weathersfield, VT, Hazel was the daughter of Mabel and Walter Goodrich, and the sister of Harriet Beattie.
Hazel married the love of her life, Hayden A. Slayton, Jr., on March 10, 1956. Together they built a life rooted in love, family, and service. She was the devoted mother of Kelly Schlosberg, Karen Coley, and Kathleen Slayton; a proud grandmother to Emily Bynum, Melissa Flocks, Tegan Nicholas, and Tanner Coley; and a joyful great-grandmother to Blair and Beau Bynum, and Ellum and Willow Nicholas. Hazel's home was always open, her heart even more so.
She pursued her passion for science and healthcare at the Carnegie Institute in Boston, MA, earning her degree in Medical Technology. Hazel dedicated 54 years to her profession, working tirelessly at Windsor Hospital and Mt. Ascutney Hospital. As the lead technologist of the lab, she oversaw the department with excellence and care, specializing in hematology, a field she deeply loved. Her pioneering spirit led to the establishment of the hospital's first Autologous Blood Donor Program, a testament to her commitment to patient care and innovation.
After retiring, Hazel continued to serve her community through volunteer work at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, Saint-Gaudens National Historic Park, and the Plainfield Library. She remained active in the Bone Builders program and found friendship and fun in the Red Hat Society.
Hazel's creativity and love for life were evident in her many hobbies. A gifted artist, she spent countless hours drawing and painting. She was known for her delicious baked goods, especially the lovingly crafted birthday cakes she made for family and friends. Hazel was an avid skier throughout the years and always treasured the outdoors. She found joy in books and puzzles and had a deep and lasting Catholic faith, worshipping at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Windsor, VT.
She was also known for her deep affection for animals, especially her beloved cats, Tucker and Tae, who were constant companions and dearly loved.
Hazel touched the lives of many with her kindness, intellect, and unwavering love for her family and community. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to a local library, animal shelter, or cancer center- places that reflect the causes Hazel held closest to her heart.
A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. Knight Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed in an online guestbook found at www.knightfuneralhomes.com
