Hayward B. Crewe

Wilder, VT - Hayward B. Crewe, 89, died Friday August 8, 2014 at Cedar Hill Continuing Care Center in Windsor, VT.

He was born April 30, 1925 in Saratoga Springs, NY a son of Benaiah and Lena (Salsman) Crewe. He graduated from Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw, MI before entering the US Army where he served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Hayward returned to Detroit and attended Wayne State University where he enjoyed studying music theory and English. Later he attended the General Theological Seminary in New York, NY. After his ordination to the Episcopal Priesthood he was assigned to churches in Jackson, MI, Hobart, IN, Rosemont, PA and a few others outside of Philadelphia including Gulf Mills & Paoloi. He was married to Anne Biddle Atlee in the Church of the Good Shepherd in Rosemont. They moved to Brandon, VT and his final assignment was at St. Barnabus in Norwich, VT.

He returned to school at the University of Vermont where he earned his Master's Degree in English. He then taught English at Hanover High School from 1967 until retiring in 1987.

After retiring, Hayward moved to Grass Valley, CA to participate in the spiritual community of Ananda. While there he helped to start a recycling center and was involved with the Mill House Ranch for Troubled Children, working as a counselor.

He returned to Vermont in 1997, settling in Wilder and becoming active at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Hayward had a passion for the Arts and helped to found, Opera North and was a member of the Parish Players. He will be remembered for his beautiful tenor voice and his notable laugh.

He is survived by his daughter Anna Biddle Crewe of White River Jct. VT, his daughter and son-in-law Veda Lynn Crewe and Robert Wellington of Swanzey, NH as well as a sister Veda (Crewe) Wilson of Sterling Heights, MI.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in White River Junction at a time to be determined.
