WINDSOR, VT
Harold S. Altmayer, 80, a resident of Windsor, passed away Wednesday morning, September 19 at his home in Windsor, surrounded by his family.
He was born January 24, 1932 in Bronx, NY, the son of Albert and Hannah Hilda (Levey) Altmayer. He graduated from Evander Childs High School in Bronx, NY, with the Class of 1950. He was a veteran of the US Air Force serving during the Korean Conflict. He married Lorraine Rindzner on June 2, 1956 and they moved to New York City that same year. Mr. Altmayer began his graphic arts business while in New York. They moved to Livingston, NJ in 1960, and were later divorced. He moved back to New York City in 1971 and married Karin Petterson-Laukkanen in Manhattan on August 31, 1973 and moved to New City, NY in 1984, where he served as Branch President of the Rockland Branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In 2001 Mr. and Mrs. Altmayer moved to Windsor.
Harold had a great interest in youth service, and volunteered as a Scout Master, Youth Mentor and served with Windsor County Partners. He was also an avid skier and was a member of the National Ski Patrol. He enjoyed photography and playing tennis. He was the Air Force Tennis National Champion holding the title for two consecutive years. He also enjoyed boating, fishing and camping. He was a fantastic dancer, both tap and ballroom. One of the most exciting moments in his life was earning his pilot's license. He lived life to the fullest.
He had a strong faith and loved the Lord. He was a proud member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was very involved with the Washington D.C. and Boston Temples and was currently a member of the Ascutney Ward.
He was predeceased by his parents, one daughter, Hannah Altmayer and one brother Edgar Altmayer.
Survivors include his wife, Karin M. Altmayer, of Windsor, two sons, Jeff Altmayer and his wife Ginger of Ankeny, IA and Aaron Altmayer and his wife Ella of Windsor, two daughters, Leah Luedtke and her husband Erik of Fort Meade, MD and Susan Creighton and her husband Kenneth of Rocklin, CA, seven grandchildren Andrew and Derek Altmayer, Christopher and Kyle Creighton, Adam and Joshua Luedtke and Sierra Altmayer.
Friends may call at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Ascutney on Friday evening, September 21 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and again on Saturday afternoon, September 22 from noon to 1:30 PM. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM with Bishop Bernard Ferland of the Ascutney Ward, officiating. Committal services will follow in the Ascutney Cemetery in Windsor. A reception for family and friends will follow back at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made by providing a service to assist someone in need; a labor of love in Harold's memory.
