Obituary

White River Jct., VT – Gordon H. Cook, Sr., 85, died peacefully, surrounded by family and his pastor, on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.

Born February 4, 1931 in Norwich, VT a son of Comery and Mattie (Richardson) Cook. Gordon attended schools in Norwich and Hanover, running track for Hanover High School. After high school Gordon became a carpenter. He married Eleanor Fogg May 17, 1952 and soon after was drafted in to the US Army, where he served two years stationed in Germany. When he returned from his military service, Gordon went to work for Trumbull- Nelson Construction Company as a foreman and project superintendant, serving the company until retiring after 38 years. During that time he oversaw the construction of many buildings in the Upper Valley including the Power House Mall in West Lebanon, NH; the Quechee Lakes Club House in Quechee, VT, the Radisson Inn in West Lebanon, NH; David's House, the Hanover Police and Fire Station and the home of Dr. Kemeny, president of Dartmouth College, all in Hanover, NH.

Gordon loved hunting, brook fishing, camping and traveling. Each spring would find him "sugaring" making many gallons of fine maple syrup for families and friends. He also served as a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scout troop in Wilder for many years. In his retirement he undertook many woodworking projects, treasured by family and friends alike. He was a devoted husband and beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was also a member of the Greater Hartford United Church of Christ.

Gordon is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eleanor; three children, Gordon Jr. and his wife Pamela of Brunswick, ME; Julie Wellman of Woodstock, VT and Andrew Cook of Achersfield, CA; eight grandchildren Jonathan Cook, David Cook, Bethany Hall, Jennifer Wellman, Sarah Wellman, Kelly Wellman, Amy Duncan-Smith and James Badger; eight great-grandchildren Eleanor, Dylan, Louis, Cicelia, Adrian, Elliot, James and Jack; a brother Howard Cook of Norwich, VT; two sisters Bertha Brown of Thetford, VT and Dora Spaulding of Norwich, VT as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a beloved daughter, Joyce Duncan, late of White River Jct. and a brother Leonard Cook late of Norwich.

Calling hours will be held at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct. Friday July 22nd from 6-8PM. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday July 23rd at 2PM at the Greater Hartford United Church of Christ. Burial will follow in the Christian Street Cemetery in Wilder.
