Hartland, VT - Gloria P. Hammond, 87, died Sunday, April 2, 2023, at the Jack Byrne Center at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.
Gloria was born in Pittsfield, NH a daughter of Earle and Emily. She attended Epsom Elementary School, graduated from Concord High School in 1953 and earned her bachelor's degree from Keene Teacher's College, now Keene State College. While in college Gloria met Philip R. Hammond and they were married in August of 1957, in Chichester, NH. The couple made their home in Sunapee, NH where Gloria started her teaching career, before moving to Hampton, NH, then Derry, NH and finally settling in Hartland, VT, where the family has lived for over fifty years. She taught for many years as a substitute teacher throughout the Upper Valley and then taught full time at the Wilder Elementary School, moving to the Dothan Brook School when it opened. Gloria was instrumental in the opening of the school and was a valued teacher there until retiring in 2001.
Gloria was a member of the First Congregational Church of Lebanon, NH, and was a member of the White River Rotary Club. Gloria enjoyed puzzles, sewing, and oil painting. She often spent time camping with family and was at home in the kitchen, cooking and baking. Gloria loved gardening and putting food by to either use at a later date or to give to someone in need. She was a graduate of the Master Gardeners Program. Her garden was extensive. She would also start three hundred tomato plants, which she sold at a roadside stand at her house. Proceeds from the plant sales and extra veggies were donated to the Hartland Food Shelf.
Gloria is preceded in death by a son Larry and a sister Maureen.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, Philip R. Hammond of Hartland; a son, David; a daughter, Holly; brothers, Ronald, Francis, and Gordon and a sister, Darleen all of Chichester, NH, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A family only graveside service will be held in the New Rye Cemetery in Epsom, NH at a later date. Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction has been entrusted with arrangements. Condolences to Gloria's family may be expressed in an online guestbook at www.knightfuneralhomes.com .
