Obituary

Wilder, Vermont – Gloria Grant Crowe, 85, died Tuesday evening, February 17, at the Lebanon Center Genesis Elder Care in Lebanon, NH. She was born July 3, 1929 in Wilder, Vermont, the daughter of Forrest and Beatrice (Bebeau) Grant.

Gloria was raised by her maternal grandparents until the age of twelve. She grew up in Wilder and attended Hartford High School, where she was a majorette, graduating in 1947. She worked for a time at Newbury's Department Store in White River Jct., VT. On August 15, 1948, Gloria married Frank E. Crowe, her high school sweetheart and the center of her world for sixty-two years. They lived in homes that they built themselves in West Lebanon until 1976, when they built a home in Norwich, VT. Frank and Gloria loved their country life there until Frank's death on February 10, 2012. In 2013, Gloria returned to Wilder, setting up and enjoying a charming home there.

No stranger to hard work and thrift, Gloria raised their four children; kept impeccable vegetable gardens and homes; was a Brownie troop leader, outstanding seamstress, and excellent cook. She enjoyed reading, drawing and painting. She loved horses and they owned and pampered many over the years. While doing all this, she worked for thirty-five years as bookkeeper for Frank at their family business, Interstate Tire Company in West Lebanon, NH. She was a member of the Hartford Emblem Club. Gloria never forgot her family's and friends' birthdays, anniversaries and special events; and she lovingly kept and cherished all of the notes, cards and letters she received from them.

When they found time for themselves, Gloria and Frank enjoyed yard sales and auctions, fishing and hunting, riding the back roads, cursing around town in their vintage MG convertible, and eating at their favorite diners.

Gloria was predeceased by her husband and a brother, James Grant.

She is survived by her two daughters: Karen Crowe and her husband, Thomas Barker of Dalton, NH, Valerie Ann Phelps and her husband, Mitchell of Fairlee, VT; and two sons: Glenn Crowe and his wife, Susan of West Lebanon, NH and Daniel F. Crowe and his wife, Barbara of Hartford, VT, She also leaves three grandchildren: Sean Pelletier of Rochester, NY, Matthew Barker of Litchfield, NH, and Mia Crowe Miller of West Lebanon; a brother John Grant and his wife Ruthie of Wilder, VT: and cousins, nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held later in the springtime in the West Lebanon Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bugbee Senior Center,262 North Main Street, White River Jct., VT 05001.
