IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Glenn Steven
Selwitz
May 28, 1949 – July 15, 2024
The world has lost a singular human being when Glenn Steven Selwitz died on July 15, 2024 in Lebanon, NH. He was born on May 28, 1949, in Springfield MA, the third child and first son of Ephraim Selwitz and Lillian (Levine) Selwitz. He moved when he was young to New Haven, CT and attended New Haven schools, finishing with Hillhouse High School.
Glenn picked up the bass guitar at DeLisle's Music School on Temple Street in New Haven as a teenager, and never put it down. He also played acoustic guitar and sang both lead and harmonies. He played with local bands in the 1960s and 1970s including "Christopher Hawke," "Tri Power" and "KITE." In 1970 Glenn, Fred Bova and Hilly Michaels from "KITE" joined up with Michael Bolton (then Bolotin) and his brother Orrin and went out to LA to pursue a record deal as the band "JOY." While there Glenn also recorded a number of pivotal albums with Christian Rock artists Larry Norman and Randy Stonehill. JOY recorded the soundtrack for "November's Children." Glenn's most amazing talent was being able to play by ear. Making music with Glenn was an amazing and deeply personal experience. He used his music and humor to help people get out of dark places and feel the joy in living that Glenn had.
Glenn participated in the youth revolution of the 1960's first by enjoying wild times on Venice Beach, CA and then by living on a commune in Topanga Canyon. He lived with Marby (Mary Beth) and they welcomed the arrival of their baby girl. Together the couple made music as a duo known as Point of Pleasure and later joined the group Freefall in northern California.
After a successful career as a touring performer and studio musician in California and Nevada, he returned East in 2010 and located at Green Dragon Farm in Weathersfield VT. He performed around the Upper Valley with the well-known Gully Boys, with Northern Ridge, with a jazz trio, and was a studio musician with several different artists. Glenn's music can be enjoyed at https://www.reverbnation.com/glennselwitz. He loved farm life. He had a deep appreciation of the natural world and watching the seasons change. His asparagus patch was legendary. He delivered his blueberry harvest to local stores and farmer's markets. His love of animals, and sensitivity for them, was one of his most endearing traits. When he left for the hospital the last time, his cat Zeke followed the ambulance crew to the driveway and looked for Glenn's return.
After a courageous 8-month battle with cancer, Glenn died the Jack Byrne Center in Lebanon NH, his family at his side. He received extraordinary care from the JBC staff. He is survived by a daughter, Rosy Dawn Selwitz of San Diego CA; a grandson, Elijah Whelan; a sister, Judie (Selwitz) Rodinsky of Winston OR, and long-time companion Alicia Jenks of Weathersfield VT. He was predeceased by both parents and his older sister, Sandra (Selwitz) Lemkin. Memorial contributions may be made to Sullivan County Humane Society in Claremont NH. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
