White River Jct., VT - Gilbert A. Grote , 81, died peacefully Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at his home.

Gilbert was born December 17, 1929 in Elmhurst, NY the son of Adolph and Susan(Brady) Grote. He graduated from St. Bartholomew's High School and went on to serve his country in the Army during the Korean War. Gilbert was married to Rita L. McDevitt May 1, 1954 in Elmhurst, NY. They later settled in West Hempstead, NY and started a family. During this time he was a salesman for the Prudential Life Insurance Company. In 1967 they left New York and settled in White River Jct., VT where they purchased the Green Mountaineer Motel and operated it until retiring in 1999.

Gilbert was active in the Hartford Men's Softball League where he played for the Fox & Hounds and Pete's Exxon.

He is predeceased by his wife Rita L.(McDevitt)Grote.

He is survived by ; Four children, Deborah Carmiggelt of Winston Salem, NC, Glenn Grote of South Royalton, Vermont, Jacqueline "Jackie" Castor and Susan Sunn both of White River Jct.; seven grandchildren, Abigail Grote, Zachary Grote, Sara Grote, Gretchen Grote, Caitlin Castor, Sean Macedo, Christopher Macedo; and four great-grandchildren, Lucas, Cameron, Sean Jr. and Bently

Visiting hours will be held Saturday, October 1 from 3-5 PM at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction Vermont.
