Germaine Marie (Rougeolle) Allen of Reading Vermont, passed peacefully on April 19, 2023, at  Springfield Health and Rehabilitation in Springfield, Vermont.  She was 97 years old.   Germaine was born on Sept. 6, 1925, to Suzanne and Henri Rougeolle, and lived her youth in Normandy, France.

As a young adult, Germaine came to Vermont to serve as a governess at Upway Farm in South Woodstock.  It is during that time she met Harold (Steve) Allen. They were married on October 16, 1954, in Chester, Vermont.   Germaine was proud to become a naturalized citizen in 1958.  The Allens raised two children at their home in Reading, Steven and Suzanne.

For many years she and her husband were the owners of the Hammondsville General Store, later adding a snack bar to the store which became a local favorite. Germaine will be remembered as a wonderful baker, known for her delicious lemon and apple cakes, muffins, pies and breads.   She was loving and loyal to her family, friends and pets.

Predeceased by her husband Harold (2005), her daughter Suzanne Walsh (1996) and her son Steven (2017), Germaine is survived by her grandson, Kirby Walsh of Reading.

A remembrance and burial will be held at Reading's Amsden Cemetery on Flat Iron Road, at 10AM on Thursday, June 15, 2023.
