Obituary

Wilder, VT – Gerald Everett Cate (Jerry) passed away unexpectedly at home on Friday, February 22, 2013. He was born April 5, 1947 in Quincy, MA, the son of Bertha and Ray Cate. Jerry moved to Hanover, NH, as a child and attended the Hanover schools. As a high school student, he worked for Dartmouth College in the Office of Instructional Services and Educational Research. For many years thereafter, he supervised the Audio-Visual Department and he served as the Technical Director of The Dartmouth Film Society. Most recently, Jerry was an independent contractor, a line of work he especially enjoyed because he loved working with his hands and being outdoors. He was an avid runner, bicyclist and was fond of cross-country skiing in Downer Forest near his home.
Jerry is survived by the love of his life for over 48 years, Marga; his sons, Alister and his wife Marion and grandchildren, Zoe, Amanda and Justin of Lebanon, NH; Ian and his wife Kristy and grandchildren, Elijah and Jasper of White River Junction, VT; his sisters, Lois Stanhope of Hanover, NH, and Martha Cole of Claremont, NH, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jerry was predeceased by his brother, Bruce Cate, of Tunbridge, VT.
Many people will recall Jerry as the six-year-old paperboy whose route included over 200 families, all of whom looked forward to his smile. He will always be remembered as a quiet, considerate, kind and loving individual. Jerry will be sorely missed. As he wished, Jerry donated his body to Harvard Medical School.
The family is planning a celebration of his life in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Upper Valley Haven, 713 Hartford Ave, White River Junction, VT 05001.
