Gerald "Jerry" A. Reed, Age 93 passed away Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Cedar Hill Healthcare Facility in Windsor, VT.
He was born January 21, 1921 in Hartford, VT son of Harold and Esther (Boutwell)
Reed. He attended Christian Street and Wilder Schools. He enlisted in the Army
June 1942 where he served with the Army Amphibious Forces in the Pacific Theater. He
served 35 months overseas, Australia, New Guinea and then to the Invasion of the
Philippine Islands. He was awarded two Arrow Head awards for D-Day Landings there.
After returning home he met and married Gloria Syriac September 4, 1949 and raised
five children. He worked 20 years at the Hartford Woolen Mill, a short while at
Dartmouth Woolen as a weaver, then 24 years as a Distribution Clerk at the
White River Postal Processing Center until his retirement August 4, 1984.
Gerald was a life member of the VFW Post 2571, the American Legion Post 26 and
the DAV, all in White River Jct., VT.
Gerald loved the outdoors tending to his flower and vegetable gardens and sitting
enjoying the fresh air. He loved hunting, fishing, pitching horseshoes and shooting
pool. He enjoyed the few trips he spent at the casinos as well. He was an avid
Red Sox and Patriots fan. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
He resided in the Town of Hartford for most of his life. Upon retiring he and
Gloria moved to Vero Beach, FL where they resided for seven years before moving to Ascutney to be closer to family.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Gloria in 2004, son Frederick Reed in 2013,
three brothers Howard, Edward and Francis; three sisters Evelyn, Lyndall and Norma.
He is survived by sons Charles and wife Jennifer of Ascutney and Robert of White River Junction; daughters Nancy Camber and husband Tom of Enfield, Joan Gates and husband Tim of White River Junction; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his loving Cedar Hill family.
A time of visitation will be held at Noon Friday, December 5, 2014 at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction, immediately followed by a funeral service at 1PM at the funeral Home.
