Hartland, VT – George Clair Tooker, 90, died Monday March 28th at his home in Hartland.

He was born August 5, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY a son of George Clair Tooker Sr. and Angela (Roura) Tooker. After attending Phillips Andover, George majored in English Literature at Harvard University, graduating in 1942. He later studied at the Art Students League of New York and was best known for his work in the Realism Movement including some of his most famous works Subway and Government Bureau. He was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1968 and is a member of The American Academy of Arts and Letters. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President George W. Bush in 2007.

George has been living in Hartland since 1958 where he has lived full time since 1975. Prior to moving to Hartland he lived in Brooklyn and wintered in Spain. While in Vermont George has been active in the community including as parishioner of St. Francis Catholic Church in Windsor and volunteering to wash dishes at holiday dinners for the less fortunate at the Rachel Harlow Methodist Church.

He is survived by his sister Mary Tooker Graham of Brooklyn; three nephews Peter B. Hume of Brooklyn, Russell S. Hume of Cape Cod, MA and Angus Christopher Timothy Graham of Long Island; a niece Angela Graham of Brooklyn and his Vermont family, Aaron, Robert, Robin and Horace Watkins and Sheila Adams all of Hartland.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday April 8th at 3PM at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Windsor. A committal service will be held at a later date in the Seaview Cemetery in Mount Sinai, NY.
