Quechee, VT – George C. Packard, Jr., 73, a lifelong resident of Hartford, died after a short illness at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center on Thursday, December 4, 2025. George was born in Hanover, NH on April 21, 1952, to parents George C., Sr. and Janet (Sugimoto) Packard. He attended Wilder Elementary School and was a 1970 graduate of Hartford High School. George was a talented mathematician who enjoyed tutoring his classmates and an impressive athlete. The summer following graduation, he played on the Shriner football team helping to raise funds for children's hospitals in the region. He went on to study mathematics at the University of Vermont before returning home and beginning his almost four-decade career with the town of Hartford where he put his analytical skills to use in the wastewater treatment laboratory.
He married Linda Wiegand on June 27, 1981, at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Woodstock, VT. The two enjoyed combining their love of traveling and the outdoors with skiing trips in the western United States and Japan, winter golfing trips to Puerto Rico and Florida, and safari visits with family in South Africa.
George loved music and was a talented singer and guitarist. For years he regularly played and sang with a group of friends, who at times performed locally. He also enjoyed athletics, always cheered on his two favorite teams: the Yankees and the Giants and volunteered as a timer at the finish line of the Covered Bridges Half Marathon for more than 20 years.
George is survived by his wife Linda Wiegand-Packard of Quechee; sister Joyce Hamilton of Springfield, VT; father-in-law John Wiegand of Quechee; siblings-in-law Claudia Wiegand and partner Mark Kurth of Rehoboth Beach, DE, Donna Wiegand-Bicknell and husband Raymond Bicknell of Beebe Plain, VT, Jack Wiegand and wife Cindy of Quechee, and Michael Wiegand and wife Ghaddra Gonzalez Castillo of Mercer Island, WA; many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
