IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gary L.
Cook
November 26, 1956 – January 28, 2024
West Fairlee, VT-Gary L. Cook, 67, died, Sunday, January 28,2024 at his home.
Gary was born November 26, 1956, in Hanover, NH to Duane 'Joe' and Virginia (Stanley) Cook. He grew up in Thetford where he attended the local schools. He graduated from Thetford Academy in 1974. Gary married his high school sweetheart Darlene Grady on May 29, 1976, in West Fairlee, where they made their home. He worked as a carpenter for Jessie Stanley, William Porter & Sons, Willem Lange, KD Building and as a freelance carpenter. After leaving formal employment he made many beautiful pieces of furniture for his family and helped with several building projects. He would dedicate time, resources and energy, following through until the end of all projects-no rest until it was done. He always remained focused on the good things and the path forward. He was a true artist with a drive and passion to create.
Gary was a member of the Union Village Church and attended the West Fairlee Church. He took pride in his lawn, enjoyed pitching horseshoes, watching NASCAR and college basketball. For 13 years he enjoyed his daily walks along VT Route 113 and many in the area referred to him as the "Walking Man". Gary also loved vegetable gardening-he said he hated it but was always out there tending to it and sharing the bounty of his labors. He was also seen out picking from his beloved berry bushes that he pruned and trained over the years. You would also see his side kick and best bud, Charlie a 12-year-old lab terrier mix, by his side at all times. Gary had the quintessential Vermont dry sense of humor delivering
zingers with the timing of a pro. His greatest joy came from his children and grandchildren being in his life.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Darlene, and three children, Nicholas (wife Anya) of Thetford VT, Jamie (husband James Smith) of Thetford VT, Garrett (fiancé Melissa Davis) of Piermont NH and 5 grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 of his brothers Guy of Fairlee VT and Douglas (wife Kimberly) of South Strafford, VT, and sister Barbara Broderick (husband, Christopher) of Lebanon, NH and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and his oldest brother Duane S Cook.
The family wishes to thank all the nurses and the entire team at Bayada Hospice for their outstanding and compassionate care given to Gary and his family.
