Gail T. Torrey, a simple yet extraordinary individual, passed away on Friday afternoon, July 7, 2023, at the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative and Hospice Care in Lebanon, NH. She faced a short but courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and unwavering love. Gail was born on December 20, 1960, in Springfield, MA, one of four children of Richard M Thews and Barbara (Bates) Thews.

Growing up in Needham, MA, Gail graduated from Needham High School in the Class of 1980. After completing her education, she followed a friend's guidance and found herself settling in Thetford, VT. Gail began her career at the City of Hanover, NH, where she dedicated herself to receiving and accounting for funds collected by the parking division. It was during this time that she crossed paths with Dale Melendy, who would later become her husband. Two years later, Gail and Dale exchanged vows, establishing their home in White River Junction.

Gail held various jobs throughout her life, each honing her talents and contributing to her growing administrative and secretarial skills. She utilized her expertise in the Psychology Department at Dartmouth Hitchcock before settling into a fulfilling role at the Hanover CO-OP, where she dedicated the past 12 years of her life.

Gail's diagnosis of ovarian cancer occurred just a few months ago, sending shockwaves through her community. Despite the hardships she faced, Gail remained true to herself and cherished the simplicity of life. She found joy in her work, forming deep connections with her colleagues and serving the customers at the CO-OP with kindness and compassion. Her downtime was spent watching and listening to her beloved Boston sports teams, including the Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins, though her love for sports extended far beyond these teams. However, above all, her heart belonged to her family.

Gail Torrey was an embodiment of simplicity, radiating warmth and always wearing a friendly smile. Her generosity knew no bounds, and she was ever ready to lend a helping hand. The impact she had on those fortunate enough to know her cannot be measured, as her genuine spirit left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered.

Gail is survived by her loving daughters, Shelby Gilbert of White River Jct., VT, and April Melendy of White River Jct., VT. She was a devoted grandmother to her four grandchildren, Haylee, Adalyn, George, and Levi, who brought immense joy to her life. Gail is also survived by her brother, Peter Thews of Holyoke, MA, and her sister, Diane Thews-Miller of Attleboro, MA. She also leaves behind her former husband, Dale Melendy as well as many nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in her heart.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother in 2008 and a brother Gary Thews in 2005.

Though her physical presence may be missed, her memory will live on, reminding us to appreciate the simple things in life, to be kind, and to share a warm smile with those around us. In her simplicity, Gail Torrey taught us the true meaning of being extraordinary.

Calling hours will be held Saturday afternoon, July 15, from 2-3 PM at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., VT. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 3 PM. A private burial service will be held in the Christian Street Cemetery in White River Jct., VT.
