Frederick B. Smith, Sr., 82, died Tuesday December 25, 2018 at the Gill Home in Ludlow, VT.

He was born at home in Thetford Center, VT a son of Daniel T. and Sylvia Mae (Waterman) Smith on August 22. 1936.  The family moved to Norwich when Fred was 5 and he has lived there since.  He attended the one room school in the Root District of Norwich, the Norwich Elementary School and then Hanover High School before enlisting in the US Army.  He served as an equipment operator with the Army Corps of Engineers from 1954 until 1956 including time in Germany.  After returning from his military service he was married to Janet Trombly December 14, 1956 in Hanover, NH and began his career with Trumbull-Nelson. He worked at Trumbull's for 35 years, retiring as the Maintenance Superintendent in 1992.  After retiring from Trumbull's he worked with his son landscaping and sugaring and for a time with the Town of Norwich.

Fred was a member of the Model A Restorer's Club and when he wasn't working enjoyed building and repairing equipment of his own including a 1930 Model A Roadster.

He was predeceased by two brothers Carl W. Smith and Kenneth G. Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Janet and son Frederick B. Smith Jr. of Norwich; daughters Laurel Smith-Raymond of Claremont, NH and Beth Begin of Weare, NH; four grandchildren; a brother Daniel T. Smith Jr. of White River Jct.; sister Betty L. Langlois of Norwich as well as several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct. on Friday December 28 ^th from 4-6PM.   Private burial will take place in the Hillside Cemetery in the spring.
