Obituary

Flossie Hortin Henry, 96, died peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, January 11, 2023, after an extended period of declining health. She spent her final days aging in her home surrounded by family and friends.

Flossie was born in Albion, Illinois on January 2, 1927. Her father, Charles, her mother, Katherine (Roosevelt), and her brothers Edgar and Raymond farmed in southern Illinois bottom land along the Little Wabash River, while her brother Ross taught math in Zion, IL. She grew up attending a one room school often taught by her father or another relative. She skipped two grades graduating from Edwards County High School in 1945. Flossie attended McKendree College in Lebanon, IL, then moved to Chicago where she earned her nursing degree from Wesley Memorial Hospital Nursing School.  She worked at Infant Welfare on the lower east side of Chicago where she met John Henry, her future husband. They were married on March 26, 1949, in Albion, IL. In 1953, her husband was drafted for the Korean War and they moved to a log cabin in Woodbury, NJ while he worked in Philadelphia. They later moved back to Illinois, joining John's family in Kankakee. They made their home in Villa Park and later Elmhurst, IL. Flossie returned to night school in Elmhurst College to earn her Bachelors of Science degree. In 1964, the family moved to East Thetford, VT and then to Norwich in 1965. While raising four children through school, Flossie returned to work as a nurse, first commuting to Waterbury State Hospital, then managing John Henry's medical practice until they retired in 1995.  After retirement they moved to Wilder.

In addition to working full time, Flossie was an active member of the Norwich Congregational Church, UCC, a volunteer at the Norwich library, and was a devoted Girl Scout Leader. She enjoyed camping with her family, gardening and absolutely loved her children.  Her love of animals led her to raise and release an orphaned crow. Flossie was always cheerful and ready to help others and will be remembered for her gracious and grateful nature.

She is predeceased by her husband, Dr. John Henry; and three brothers, Edgar, Raymond, and Ross Hortin.

Survivors include three sons: Frederic Henry of South Royalton, Philip Henry of Enfield, NH, and Charles Henry of Lebanon, NH; two daughters: Charlotte K. Bodding of Anacortes, WA and Joyce Vincent of Cornish Flat, NH; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
