Everett John Smith, 80, a long time resident of White River Junction, died at Hanover Terrace Nursing Home in Hanover, New Hampshire on September 8, 2010.
Everett was born on June 27, 1930, in Hanover, New Hampshire, the son of George W. and Mildred (McCarthy) Smith. He attended Hartford schools through his tenth grade year and was graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1947. He continued to share friendships with his Hartford High School classmates throughout his lifetime. He attended Williams College as a member of the Sigma Phi fraternity and was graduated, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1951. He earned an MBA degree from Harvard University in 1953 then attended Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. Everett served in the United States Navy and Naval Reserves for more than twenty years, retiring in the rank of Lieutenant Commander. During his active duty he served as the Supply and Disbursing Officer on the Fletcher-class destroyer, USS Heermann, and the Haskell-class attack transport, USS Okanogan. Everett began his civilian career as a Certified Public Accountant at the firm of Lybrand, Ross Brothers and Montgomery in Boston, Massachusetts for several years. He then returned to Vermont and joined his father's accounting firm in 1958. Smith, Batchelder and Rugg grew to be the largest accounting firm north of Boston. Everett retired as the senior partner after serving for forty years.
Everett married Sandra Freitas on June 6, 1959, at Saint Anthony's Catholic Church in White River Junction. He was a steadfast husband and loving father who enjoyed time with his family. A kind man of highest integrity, Everett was dedicated to a life of honest work to provide for his loved ones.
Everett was a devout Catholic and lifelong member of Saint Anthony's Parish where he served as Chairman of the Finance Committee on the Parish Council and was a distinctive tenor voice in the church choir. Everett served on the Board of Directors at Camp Billings on Lake Fairlee in Vermont for many years. He also was a member of the Hartford Historical Society.
Everett was active in sports from childhood, enjoying tennis, squash, volleyball, baseball, running, and candlepin bowling. He was a varsity wrestler at Williams and he fondly recalled memories of touch football games on the Sig House lawn. He loved spending time on the Maine seacoast, particularly at Old Orchard Beach, where he spent portions of summers throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sandra, of White River Junction; one daughter, Ellen Mary Smith Cron and her husband, Alan, and grandchildren, Madeleine Elizabeth and Henry Everett Thomas of Wrentham, Massachusetts; one son, Professor Thomas Everett Smith and his wife, Rachelle, and identical twin granddaughters, Amaya Michelle and Keiko Elizabeth of Williamstown, Massachusetts; one brother, George W. Smith, Jr. and his wife, Roberta of White River Junction and several nieces and nephews.
Friends and relatives may call at Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction on Sunday, September 12 from 4:00–6:00 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Anthony's Catholic Church in White River Junction at 11:00 AM on Monday, September 13, with Father Kenneth Thibodeau officiating.
