Eugene H. Torrey

White River Jct., VT – Eugene H. Torrey, 77, died Saturday September 8, 2012 at home in White River Jct.

Gene was born at home in Plainfield, NH on November 26, 1934 a son of Arthur and Leona (Weber) Torrey. He attended the Brook School in Plainfield for seven years, the eighth grade in Meriden, and graduated from West Lebanon High School Class of 1953. While in high school he worked part time at the First National Store in West Lebanon and later worked at Al's Super Market in Hanover. He took a break from his career to serve in the US Army, including time in Germany with the 4th Armored Division. After returning from his service in the military he began work at the Super Duper in Lebanon before opening and managing the Hanover Super Duper. Gene then worked as a salesman for Supreme Cookie Distributors selling Keebler and Archway Cookies along with hundreds of other food products for thirty four years before retiring.

He was married to Edna Gray at the Thetford Congregational Church on September 16, 1961. They have lived in White River Jct., VT for most of their married lives.

Gene was a member of the American Legion Post 26 in White River Jct. where he was a Past Post Commander and chaired the Senior Citizen's Bingo for over thirty years. He worked the general Bingo for the post for over thirty years as well, serving as chair for several years. He was also a member of the Lebanon B.P.O.Elks Lodge for over 25 years.

He enjoyed traveling with his wife; they made it to 49 states together, missing only Oregon. One of his most recent enjoyments was watching his grandson, Conner, play basketball for Mascoma Regional High School where the team went undefeated during the regular season his senior year.

Gene was predeceased by his parents; two half brothers and their wives, Francis and Alice Torrey and Than and Bessie Torrey; a brother Arthur Torrey and his wife Gloria, an infant brother Walter Alan Torrey; his sister Patricia Ann Torrey and his daughter-in-law Allison Torrey.

He leaves his wife of over fifty years, Edna, of White River Jct.; five sons Mark Torrey and his twin daughters Katie and Brandy of Canaan, NH, David Torrey of Hartland, VT, Randall Torrey and his wife Rebecca and their children Conner and Haley of Canaan, NH; Robert Torrey of Pawtucket, RI, Jonathan and his wife Michelle and their sons Jacob and Nathan of Firestone, CO as well as several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., VT Tuesday September 11th from 6-8PM. A graveside service will be held in the West Lebanon Cemetery Wednesday at 10AM.
