Obituary

Ethan James Ciccotelli, beloved son of Ernie (Ernest James) Ciccotelli and Brenda E. Arbuckle, beloved brother of Dylan William Ciccotelli, and beloved friend to so many, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 36 on December 19, 2023.

Ethan was born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 3, 1987.  He was brought home to his parents' artist's studio in Maverick Square in East Boston, where he spent the first year of his life before moving to Norwich, Vermont in 1988.  His grade school years were spent at Marion Cross School in Norwich, Vermont.  He graduated from Hanover High School, Hanover, New Hampshire in 2005, where he earned his letter in rowing.  He attended Rochester Institute of Technology and graduated with a bachelor's degree in science for Electrical Engineering Technology in 2012.

Ethan was one of those bright lights that shine in the lives of everyone who knew him, or even just met him.  His kindness and loyalty were prominent traits, along with a stunning intelligence capable of deeply understanding an enormously broad range of subjects, from dinosaurs and fossils when he was young to science, engineering and philosophy as he got older, with history and art in between.  He was kind to not only his family and friends, but also those people and animals who he just met in passing.  The person who raged found in him a peaceful friend. The child lost in the crowd a hero to help them get back to comfort.  And of course, his family and friends valued highly his deep loyalty, and willingness to always be present to help.

Ethan was a true renaissance man who continually nurtured his thirst for learning through research, tinkering, and reading.  His knowledge of science fiction novels, metal forging, and history was encyclopedic.  His artistic talent was formidable, with an impressive understanding of perspective and motion.  Inventive and imaginative, Ethan's brilliant mind made him an exceptional engineer and creator who could look at a problem or bundle of components and in very little time, come up with an inventive solution or use the bits to create something completely new.  At the time of his passing, his application for a patent for a way of taking a simple raw material, zinc oxide, and forming it into simple devices with simple tools and methods that converted heat into electrical current for charging the small devices in developing societies was in its final stages of examination, and the details of the invention already published by the U.S. Patent Office.

He is survived by his father Ernie Ciccotelli and wife Paula Bergeron of Norwich, Vermont; his brother Dylan Ciccotelli and girlfriend Amanda Montgomery of Winchester, Massachusetts; his uncle Paul Ciccotelli and wife Patricia of Wareham, Massachusetts; his aunt Marie (Tish) Ciccotelli of Rochester, Massachusetts, his cousin, Nathaniel Ciccotelli and wife Heather Nunes Ciccotelli and their four children of Sharon, Connecticut; his aunt Zaleha Ciccotelli of Westport, Massachusetts; his beloved girlfriend, Allison Lessard of Quechee, Vermont; his mother Brenda E. Arbuckle (Chris Calvin) of Hartland, Vermont; his aunt Bonny (Arbuckle) Streeter and husband Greg Streeter of Morrisville, Vermont; his grandparents Walter Arbuckle and his wife Elizabeth of Braintree, Vermont; and importantly, his many friends.  Ethan is predeceased by his grandfather, Ernest S. Ciccotelli; his grandmother Marie T (Hannon) Ciccotelli; his uncle John Louis Ciccotelli; and his cousin, Harvest Breeze Ciccotelli.

Ethan's family hopes that those who knew him are able to join together on Friday, January 5, 2024, from 4 until 6 pm at Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction, VT for a visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are appreciated to the Upper Valley Humane Society or the Upper Valley Haven.
