ERNEST C SHAWCROSS
Ernest Charles Shawcross, 90, of Wilder, Vt., passed away Tuesday, October 5, with family by his side. He was born on 30 October 1919 in Arlington, N. J., to Ernest Shawcross and Lillian Kuncken Shawcross.
He grew up in Hillside, N. J., where he graduated from Hillside High School in 1937. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree from Newark State Teachers College (now Kean University).
In 1941 Ernie enlisted in the United States Navy and was on active duty from 1943 to 1945 and reached the rank of Lieutenant, JG. He volunteered for extra hazardous duty, serving in a Beach Jumpers unit that provided diversion for allied forces in the Philippines.
Ernie married Rigmor Henriksen on 28 April 1945 and settled in Westfield, N. J., where they raised a family of two boys and two girls. He devoted his energy and abilities to the students of the Pingry School, first in Elizabeth, N. J. and later in Martinsville, N.J. His inspired and memorable career at Pingry lasted from 1946 until his retirement in 1985, during which time he taught a variety of courses and served as an administrator in the Upper School. Ernie enriched his natural talent as an educator by earning masters degrees in chemistry from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y, and in guidance and school administration from Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J.
Ernie was preceded in death by his eldest child, Jeffrey. He is survived by his wife of 65 years; his brother, John, of Lexington, Ky.; his son, Steven, of Alpharetta, Ga.; and two daughters, Susan Crane, of Hanover, N. H., and Nancy, of Narberth, Pa. He is also survived by his sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Ernie cared most about his family, his students, and his gardening and maintained a love-hate relationship with the game of bridge. He was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church in White River Junction, VT.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday October 9th at 10AM at St. Anthony's Church with burial following in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery both in White River Jct.
