Lebanon, NH- Ernest H. Barnes, 80, died Saturday, August 1, 2026. Ernest was born March 20, 1946, in Lebanon, NH, a son of Harold and Alice (Tucker) Barnes. He grew up in South Royalton and graduated from South Royalton High School in 1964. Following high school, he went to work at the Super Duper Grocery Store warehouse in White River Junction before taking a position in the mail room at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital. He later transferred to the copy center, where he remained until his retirement in 2008.
He married Shirley Adolph in 1967 in South Royalton and made their home in Lebanon, where they raised their family. Ernest was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lebanon and was a former member of the Lebanon Elks. He loved and supported sports of all levels. He was an avid fan of both the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs, served as the penalty box attendant for Dartmouth Women’s Hockey, enjoyed giving back to the community by coaching little league and supporting youth hockey, and he held season tickets for the Portland Sea Dogs. While in Portland, ME to cheer on the team, he and Shirley would often visit the Portland Head Light, one of many lighthouses he loved. In his younger years, Ernest also enjoyed riding his motorcycle.
Ernest is preceded in death by his father, Harold Barnes. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Barnes of Lebanon; two children, Dawn Lee and husband Jeff of East Plainfield, NH, and Michael Barnes and wife Nikki of Grantham, NH; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his mother, Alice Barnes of West Lebanon, NH; and his brother, Gordon Barnes and wife Judy of White River Junction, VT.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 10:30 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lebanon, NH. Condolences may be expressed in an online guestbook at www.knightfuneralhomes.com.
