Obituary

Ascutney, VT – Emily deForest Guertin, 92, died Saturday morning, October 12, 2013 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Ascutney. She has been under their loving care and resided at their home since January. Emily was born November 9, 1920 in Winsted , CT the only child of Harold B. and Helen deForest (Smith) Carruth. She graduated from Milton High School in Milton , MA where her family had moved when she was four years old. She enlisted in the US Navy and served our country during World War II in the Navy W.A.V.E.S. as a Pharmacist Mate Third Class. Her training in the military brought out her leadership skills and after receiving her honorable discharge, she was hired as a Supervisor at the John Hancock Insurance Company in Boston , MA . While working at John Hancock she met her future husband, Frank B. Guertin. They were married July 9, 1949 and made their home in Stoughton , MA where they raised their two children and where she lived all of her life until moving to Vermont to stay with her daughter. As she cared for their children, Emily stayed busy volunteering as a Girl Scout
Troop Leader, active member and officer of the Stoughton Historical Society, the Eastern Garden Club of Stoughton, contributor, along with her husband to the Audubon Society and in later years with the Weathersfield Historical Society here in Vermont .

She was extremely talented. Emily was an exquisite seamstress and enjoyed crafting fine keepsakes for friends and family. Emily made her daughter's wedding dress and worked on other dresses for numerous special occasions. She was deeply inquisitive about nature and was an avid bird-watcher. She also loved houseplants.

She was predeceased by her husband, who died August 25, 2003.

Her survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, William D. Guertin and his wife, Linda of Stoughton, MA, her daughter and son-in-law, deForest Bearse and her husband, Dave of Ascutney, VT, five grandchildren and one great grandson.

A graveside service celebrating her wonderful life will be held Thursday afternoon, October 17, at 2PM in the Ascutneyville Cemetery in Ascutney , VT.
