Ascutney, VT – Emily Johnson Abbott, 99, died peacefully Friday, April 17, 2026, at her home surrounded by those who loved her.
Emily was born November 5, 1926, in Claremont, NH. She graduated from Stevens High School in 1945 and married Edward J. Abbott on August 2, 1947, at the Ascutney Union Church in Ascutney, VT. The couple lived briefly in Springfield, VT, before settling in Ascutney, where they remained. Emily played an important role in the daily operations of both the household and the family dairy farm, working side by side with Ed until his death on May 28, 2011.
She was a member of the Ascutney Union Church, where she sang in the choir, and attended Old South UCC in Windsor, VT. Emily was past president of the Homemakers, past master of the Ascutney Grange #518, a member and leader of 4-H, and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed making crafts and was an accomplished rug braider and rug hooker. Emily was an accomplished artist in her own rite. She also loved reading, taking long drives, and going on picnics.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ed, and her sister, Pauline Annah Fitch.
She is survived by two daughters, Louannah “Annah” Abbott of Windsor and Janice Emily Abbott and her friend Patrick Lyman O’Connor of Ascutney.
The family wanted to acknowledge her authoring her own obituary.
A private interment will be in Ascutneyville Cemetery in Ascutney, VT. Knight Funeral Home in Windsor has been entrusted with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed in an online guestbook at www.knightfuneralhomes.com.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Abbott Johnson Wildlife Sanctuary.
