Hartland, VT – Ellen B. Mayhew Hart, 74, died at her home with her family by her side on Monday, December 18, 2023. The daughter of Alfred and Arlyne (Doolittle) Mayhew, she was born in Rutland, VT on March 9, 1949, spent her early childhood in Woodstock, and moved to Hartland at the age of 4 after her father built the family home. She attended elementary school in Hartland and graduated from Windsor High School in 1967. She was a talented flautist in the high school band and frequently joined her pianist mother for years performing duets until Arlene's death. She also developed her skiing talents in high school, an interest that continued her entire life until her illness made it impossible for her to be out on the slopes.

Ellen graduated from Becker College with a degree in Journalism in 1969, and after a short period of working for several small newspapers, she went to work at New England Telephone in Boston. In March of 1996, she married a longtime friend, Gene Driscoll, Jr., and the two merged their households in the home that her father had built in Hartland. In retirement, she explored her artistic voice, creating beautiful stained glass works and oil landscapes on canvas. She loved to create and then share her artwork with family, friends, and local organizations for fundraising endeavors. In the winters she and Gene, along with family and friends, would ski and spend time at a vacation home in South Carolina.

Ellen is survived by her husband, Gene Driscoll, Jr. of Hartland; two sons, Arlyn Hart-Messer of Keene, NH and Jared Hart-Messer of Leominster, MA; one brother, David Mayhew of Shelbyville, KY; three step-children, Eugene Driscoll, III and wife Jennifer of Lebanon, NH, Gavin Driscoll and wife Melanie of Windsor, VT, and Sarah Driscoll of White River Junction, VT; three grandchildren, two step grandchildren, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A funeral service will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at Knight Funeral Home in Windsor, VT. A graveside service will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, June 5th, 2024 in the Hartland Village Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Dementia Society of America.
