Elizabeth "Betty" (Bigelow) Moulton, was once again united with her life-mate, Dan Moulton, on October 21, 2020. Dan and Betty were married in Fair Haven 1953. Dan had predeceased Betty in 1997, causing her to live the last twenty years without the warmth of his companionship. Toward the end she expressed that loss more and more poignantly. For forty-four years they'd made a life together, first in Burlington, and then Hartland. Finally, they settled on their small hobby farm in Beaver Meadow, where Betty had to compete for Dan's attention with a menagerie of his chickens, ducks, pigs, cows, and with Dan's second love, border collies.
Along the way Dan and Betty managed to raise a family of six kids, who have by now peregrinated across half of America from their Norwich home. Since Dan's death Betty has lived in Wilder, Vermont. The two met when Dan crewed on the Lake Champlain's "Ticonderoga". Now ensconced on dry land in the Shelburne Museum, insiders know the Ticonderoga for several years plied the waves of Lake Champlain as an excursion dinner cruiser. Having learned how to navy during WWII's Pacific theater, Dan came by his sea legs honestly, but he never did learn to swim.
Betty was born in 1932 to Esther and George Bigelow and was raised in Fair Haven, long before the interstates changed Vermont forever. George died when Betty was young and her mother raised her, her sister Mary, and brother Robert alone. Betty graduated from Fair Haven schools, and received her RN from Mary Fletcher nursing school in Burlington. Born in 1924, Dan was raised on a sidehill in Groton, on a gorgeous piece of Vermont farm acreage. Betty worked first at Fletcher Allen Hospital. She was the first female supervisor at the first Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital. After that both she and Dan worked for many years in the Veterans Administration hospital in White River Junction. Betty served as the Head Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit.
Betty is survived by six children. Sheila and John Aubin, live in North Troy, Vermont; Linda R. Lavin is in Rhinebeck, New York; Wanda and Brian Denoncour are from Contoocook, New Hampshire; and Lisa and Jim Straus live in Austin, Texas. Danny and Jane live in Fort Ann, New York; and David and his wife Karen live in Chickasaw, Alabama. Betty, affectionately referred to as "Nain" by them all, cherished visits with her fifteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Her sister Mary Stone lives in Rutland. Her cousin Jean Douglas lives in Fair Haven. Betty was predeceased by her brother Robert.
Ever with a book in her lap, after retirement Betty volunteered for many years at the Norwich Public Library. She also kept her hands busy as an avid knitter, did ceramics, and hosted scrapbooking events. The family were long-time members of the Norwich Congregational Church. Calling hours will be Tuesday the 26 th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction. The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorial remembrances be made either to the Norwich Congregational Church, Norwich Public Library, or to the Miss Betty Fund at Valley Terrace. The family wants to thank the nurses and staff at Valley Terrace and Bayada for the wonderful care and support they were able to provide Betty during her last few months.
