Hartland, Vermont – Elinor Margaret (Barton) Garcia, 87, died on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at Merten's House in Woodstock, VT.
Elinor was born and spent her early life in Windsor, VT, the daughter of Fred and Margaret (Lapine) Barton. As a child, her musical interests blossomed and she became an accomplished violinist and vocalist, excelling in the business courses offered at Windsor High School. She married Raul Garcia on October 30, 1954, and the two left Windsor to start their life together in Harrison, NY. She rose quickly through the ranks in the payroll department of Allstate Insurance, soon becoming the assistant to the Controller of the eastern US region of Allstate. Raul's career took them to Trumbull, CT where they raised their two children, Cheryl and Michael. In Trumbull, Elinor enjoyed a successful career as a residential real estate agent, while volunteering for the Junior League, Meals on Wheels, and the Kennedy Center for Disabled Adults. Her passion for music and the arts inspired her to share her talents on stage in local community theatre, and with the residents at the Kennedy Center. Always ready for an adventure, Elinor enjoyed the family's numerous cross country camping trips, making new friends at every campground. Elinor and Raul cherished their many friends, playing cards, sharing dinner, and hosting neighborhood parties. After living in Connecticut for 34 years, Elinor and Raul retired to their native and beloved Vermont, settling in Hartland in 1992. Retirement brought many more adventures, as they traveled extensively, visiting Australia, New Zealand, France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Hawaii, and Bermuda. For many years, Elinor and Raul wintered in Florida, enjoying the company of friends, playing Rummikub by the pool. Some of Elinor's happiest times were spent with her grandchildren. They all treasure fond memories of picnics in the grass, tea parties in silly hats, and many singalongs with their Grammy playing guitar.
Elinor is survived by her husband, Raul Garcia of Hartland; two children, Cheryl Shamon and husband, Doug, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL and Michael Garcia and wife, Lisa, of Hebron, CT; grandchildren, Lauren Breidenbach and husband, Jeff, Joe and Cody Shamon, and Kevin and Matthew Garcia; great grandson, William Breidenbach; other relatives and friends. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff at Merten's house for their compassionate care.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Robert Mastic.
