Windsor, VT - Eleanor Somers Steele Laakso, 90, formerly of Ascutney died Saturday January 9, 2010 at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center.
She was born December 7, 1919 in St. Johnsbury, VT the daughter of Edward A. and Etta Belle (Parker) Somers. She graduated as Salutatorian from Peacham Academy in Peacham, VT in 1937. She was married to Herbert C. Steele of West Barnet, VT on November 13, 1938 (he predeceased her May 28, 1972). They moved to Ascutney where they raised six children. They were also foster parents for Vermont Children's Aid. She cooked for the Ascutney School Hot Lunch Program and later worked as Ward Clerk and Cook for the Windsor Hospital. She also worked at Furman's Department Store in Springfield. She was married to Frank I. Laakso of Ludlow, VT June 19, 1982. They enjoyed spending Winters at their home in Mt. Dora, FL. She has been a resident at the Mt. Ascutney Skilled Nursing Facility for the past five years.
Mrs. Laakso enjoyed quilting, especially making them for her children, grandchildren and great grand children. She was lovingly called "Woompie" by her Dad and "Gam" by her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her husbands and leaves behind her six children: Nancy S. Spaulding and her husband Rodney of Ascutney; Janice S. Brown and her husband Tom of Plymouth, VT; Barbara S. Porter and her husband Bob of Chichester, NH; Susan S. Devost and her husband Mark of Grantham, NH; Herbert C. "Chip" Steele Jr. and his wife Patricia of Weathersfield, VT; Richard E. "Rick" Steele and his wife Penny of Springfield; as well as 15 beloved grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and her only brother Edward R. "Tim" Somers and his wife Ann of Danville, VT and nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor, VT Wednesday January 13th from 1-2PM. A celebration of her life will follow at 2PM at the funeral home with the Rev. Constance Moser officiating. A private burial will be held in the Spring in the Ascutneyville Cemetery in Ascutney, VT.
