Obituary

Strafford, Vermont – Eleanor Jean Durkee, 83, died Thursday, January 17, 2013 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. She was born February 19, 1929 in Hartford, VT the daughter of Clyde and Jesse (Rathburn) Clogston. Jean married Robert Compston and they lived in several locations around the country including Kansas, Texas and Hartford, VT. They followed Robert's work where ever it took him. Together, they had three children. Following their divorced, Jean married James C. Durkee in May of 1959 and made their home in Strafford, VT. She worked for a time in housekeeping at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH and then for a time as a machine operator at Thermal Dynamics. She also did private duty housekeeping in and around the Upper Valley area. Following the death of her husband in 1981 she lived in White River Jct., VT at Graystone Village and then most recently at Valley Terrace on Christian Street. Jean loved racing, camping, hunting, cooking, gambling and bingo. Most of all she loved being with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband, her son, Robert Compton, daughter, Susie Compton, and twelve brothers and sisters. She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Janice and Richard Moses of Tunbridge, VT, Sandi and Aldo Clark of Sharon, VT, Debbie and Douglas Clark of Strafford, VT, two sons and their wives, James and Tammy Durkee of West Hartford, VT, David and Michelle Durkee of White River Jct., VT, 13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, one great, great granddaughter, two brothers, Charles Clogston and Winston Clogston both of St. Albans, VT, a sister Claudette Welch of White River Jct., VT, numerous nieces and nephews and lots of friends. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, January 26, from 3-7PM at the Bugbee Senior Center in White River Jct., VT. A graveside service will be held later in the springtime in the Strafford Cemetery in Strafford, VT. Memorial contributions may be made to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, 1 Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, NH 03756 or to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312. The Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., VT is assisting with arrangements.
