Norwich, VT- Edward H. Stein, 90 died Saturday, November 23, 2019 at Valley Terrace Assisted Living in Wilder, VT. Ed Stein was a former resident of Diamond Cove on Great Diamond Island in Portland Maine. He was previously a resident of Florida and New York.
Ed was born November 16, 1929 in the Women's Hospital in New York City, the son of Milton and Flora Stein. He graduated from Long Beach High School, class of 1947 and he furthered his education graduating from the State University of New York Farmingdale with a degree in Agriculture. He loved to share how to best prune grape vines. After College, he helped run the family farm near Albany, NY till he was called to serve his country in the US Army during the Korean War. Before he left for the military he enjoyed a cross country motorcycle trip. He proudly served in Military Intelligence and had many great stories to share from these days.
After serving in the Army, he married his high school sweetheart, Joan Schwartz in 1951 and they had two children, Peter and Amy. Their marriage lasted for 30 years during which time he developed skills as a builder and together they ran a very successful general contractor business on the North Shore of LI. He later built his grandchildren their play house in Norwich, Vermont.
Ed was later married in February 1984 to Charlotte Butler, the love of his life, and they lived together in NYC, LI and together on Great Diamond Island in Maine for over 20 years. They would summer in Maine and often winter in Florida. After Charlotte died, Ed lived in Florida for another 9 years with his good friend from Long Beach High School, Judy Goldman. He moved to Valley Terrace in VT 18 months ago to be near his family.
During Ed's time in Long Beach, NY Ed was an active member of the Hempstead Bay Sailing Club and a talented sailor with numerous trophies and award from years of competitive nautical events. Later he was an active sailor in Maine taking his boat down the intercoastal waterway numerous times (some say too many times). He was a very active parent, grand parent and great grand parent and he introduced his son to skiing at age 5. Once he retired, with his finely honed carpentry skills he was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity both in Maine and in Florida.
Ed was predeceased by his much loved daughter Amy Stein in 1982.
He is survived by his son, Peter Stein and his daughter-in-law, Lisa Cashdan of Norwich Vermont. He also is survived by his adored grand children, Alexandra Stein Jackson and William Stein and he cared deeply about each of their families, including Ali's husband Daniel, and Ed's great grand children Arlo and Finn Jackson and Willy's soon to be wife Elise Baudon.
Ed is also survived by his much cherished sister, Enid and her husband Norman Fleishman and his beloved nephews, niece and grand nieces and nephews and a great grand nephew!
A Family Remembrance will be held in mid December and then a celebration of his life will be held in Maine during the summer of 2020. Interment will be in the Ruskin Memorial Park in Ruskin, Fl.
