White River Jct., VT – Edward G. Lane, Jr., 72, died Saturday evening, February 23, 2019 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH following a brief illness.
He was born October 13, 1946 in Montpelier, VT a son of Edward and Eudora (Lumber) Lane. Ed grew up in the Montpelier area and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1965, where he enjoyed playing football. He then served with the Seabee's (Construction Battalion) in the US Navy from 1965 until 1967. After returning from the Navy he worked as a bartender at The Pines Restaurant in Montpelier. He was married to Carol Zeh in 1973 and that same year began his 30 year career with the United States Postal Service. He worked in the Montpelier post office until he was transferred to White River Jct. where the family has lived since. He retired in 2003 and has worked part time as a driver for the Connecticut Valley Auto Auction for the past several years.
Ed was a kind-hearted, caring, and generous soul with a smile that could light up a room. He enjoyed spending time outdoors especially time in his flower gardens and in his younger years, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed rock hunting and beachcombing to find treasures for his gardens. He was an avid reader and enjoyed watching the Red Sox and Patriots. Most of all he enjoyed time sharing stories with family and friends.
He was predeceased by a son, Bryon Lane in 2001; and many beloved pets. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carol, of White River Jct.; a daughter, Bethany Sprague and husband Chris of West Rutland; brother, Allan Lane and wife Linda M. of Plainfield, VT; sisters, Linda L. Lane of Montpelier and Vickie Adams and husband Rob of Middlesex, VT as well as several nieces, nephews, and furry "grandkids".
Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., VT on Friday March 1st from 6-8PM. A funeral service will be held on Saturday March 2nd at 11AM at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Vermont Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center in the spring.
