Obituary

Hartland, VT- With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Douglas Gene Whitcomb on February 21, 2024 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.

Doug was born in Randolph Vermont at Gifford Memorial Hospital on February 4th, 1940. He was a son of Gladys E. and Raymond H. Whitcomb, who were from South Royalton at the time. At age two, his family moved to Windsor, VT.

During his most youthful years, Doug was very active in all sports at Windsor High School, and Methodist Church youth groups. He also was an Eagle Scout in Troop 17. Doug loved to fish, hunt, and snowmobile. He also enjoyed archery, camping, and wildlife. He played clarinet and piano, was in the high school band, and loved playing pool. Also, he loved playing cards with his poker friends.

Doug joined the VT Army National Guard, CO. G, 172nd infantry while a junior in high school. Two days after graduation in 1958, Doug went to Guard Camp at Camp Drum. Two days after Guard Camp, Doug joined the US Air Force. While serving in the Air Force, Doug attended schools in the Mechanical and Electrical fields. After graduation, he attended school to become a teacher. He then taught in the same school which he graduated from. He received credits from the University of Illinois. He also graduated from many USAFL courses in related fields. After teaching, Doug was sent to Okinawa to work on the flight lines at Naha Air Base. Next stop was Bangkok, Thailand during the buildup of the Vietnam War.

After receiving his honorable discharge from the US Air Force, Doug returned to reside in Windsor with his parents. He then went to work for T&L Electric in White River Jct. and began a long 35-year employment with Cone Automatic in Windsor. Doug was a machinist, heat treater, electrician, and worked on assembly. Also, he was instrumental in organizing the United Electrical Union at Cones and become President of Local #258. He also became secretary of treasury of district II, which also gave him a seat with the national UE union, with an office in Pittsburg, PA. Doug was a skilled negotiator and arbitrator.

Living most of his life in Windsor, he became very active, serving in many town organizations including Windsor Men's League Softball. Doug played, coached, and managed teams that played in many state and regional championships. He always treasured going to the Nationals and finishing 13th, then 4th, in the Nation with the Snap-On tool team from Bow, NH. The game was major modified level. Doug was also an umpire for girl's high school softball in both NH and VT. He was an umpire for ASA men's softball for many years. Doug's favorite sport was basketball. His highlighted experience was playing on a traveling team while stationed in Okinawa and winning all the PACAF Championship in Guam. Doug was also commissioner of the Paradise Park Commission in Windsor. He was a past post commander of Windsor Post #25 American Legion.

Doug married Barbara Maxham in 1970. They were parents of David G. Whitcomb and Dean R. Whitcomb. Doug later married Suzanne Danyew Morse in 1992. Doug was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Robert J. Whitcomb and Donald G. Whitcomb, and baby Roger.

Doug leaves behind Suzanne, his son David and his wife Rebeca, their 3 children, Nizhoni, Naomi, and Jack; his son Dean, step daughter Carrie Huppe and her husband Craig, and their 2 children Alicia and Gavin. He also leaves his great grandson Austin, and his beloved kitty Bramble Claw.

Doug's family wanted to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff, doctors, nurses, emergency department, and palliative care staff at Dartmouth Hitchcock for their loving care for Doug and his family.

Services will be held in The Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel in Randolph Center, VT, Friday, April 26, 2024, at 1pm. A celebration of life will be held at the Windsor American Legion Saturday, April 27 from 1pm-4pm.   Knight Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
