Obituary

Norwich, VT – Douglas Campbell, 95, died Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative and Hospice Care in Lebanon, NH.

He was born February 11, 1929, in Cold Spring, NY to Duncan and Louise (Hagmaier) Campbell. He graduated from Cold Spring Haldane High School in 1947 and later earned bachelor's degrees in psychology and anthropology from Hobart College. He was honorably discharged from the Army in July of 1955, after nobly serving in the Korean war in a unit detecting Russian nuclear activity.

He would regularly travel to Vermont to ski, which is where he met Betty in the early sixties, at the Sitzmark Lodge in Wilmington. Both being from New York, they returned home and were inseparable. They traveled all around the US, covering many miles on Doug's motorcycle together, and photographing their memories. In 1971, they married in The Little Church Around the Corner on a cold, snowy day in January. They lived in New York City on the upper east side where he was a professional photographer, once even having Mick Jagger ask him what its like to be a photographer. They took regular trips to Nantucket, and fell in love with the beautiful island, so much they decided to move there. For five years, Doug took on almost every role at the local airport. During this time, they welcomed their only son into the world, Price Campbell.  As a family, they spent many hours on the beaches and in the ocean together, fishing and enjoying the outdoors.

In 1975, they decided to permanently relocate their family to Vermont. He dedicated many years as a Probation and Parole Officer in White River Junction. Restarting the Boy Scout Troop after many years without one. With his son and wife by his side, he finished the family home they bought. Douglas was an incredibly thoughtful, caring and loving person who put others first before himself. He had such a dynamic life and fulfilled many roles but being father and husband the most important to him.

Douglas is survived by his wife Betty, and son Price, both of Norwich.

He is predeceased by his brother, Duncan, and sister, Louise.
