Obituary

Dorothy M. Hood

Pompanoosuc, VT – Dorothy M. Hood, 83, died at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon on Friday March 25th surrounded by her family. She was born November 20, 1927 in Pompanoosuc to the late Frank and Francese (Wells) Wight.

Dorothy attended the one room schoolhouse in Pompanoosuc and graduated from the 8th grade there.

She married Ernest Hood on August 29, 1952 and they lived their entire married life in the farmhouse in Pompanoosuc that she was born in.

Dorothy worked hard all her life whether it be on the family farm, raising her family or working as a chambermaid at Howard Johnson's in White River Jct. after Ernest died unexpectedly in 1970 and left her with three young children to raise alone.

She enjoyed watching the Red Sox, NASCAR, motocross racing and "wrastling".

Dorothy also enjoyed feeding the birds and especially liked watching the hummingbirds and kept busy chasing squirrels away from the feeders. She loved country music, the color purple, gladiolas, trips to Gorham, NH in the White Mountains where her father grew up and hanging out with her son David's cat Hilly.

She also loved her family very much and enjoyed the Fourth of July family cookouts and fireworks. She even showed everyone a few fancy dance steps one year when a firecracker landed next to her foot. Christmas was her favorite holiday and she especially enjoyed decorating the tree.

Dorothy was a fantastic cook and baker; her pies, cakes and doughnuts were especially enjoyed by family and friends.

Dorothy crocheted dozens of afghans over the years and made a special one for each of her great-grandchildren to come home from the hospital with. She was also a wonderful seamstress, sewing clothes for herself and her children.

She had a "green thumb" and had a house full of plants including many African Violets.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Ernest and three brothers, Herman, Alvin and Theron "Bud" Wight.

She is survived by her son David Hood and his companion Donna Whitehill of Pompanoosuc; her daughter Lorie Hood and her companion Everett Chamberlin of White River Jct.; her daughter Teresa Hood of Lebanon; her granddaughter Samantha Prior and her husband Bobby and their children Shayla and Tarin of White River Jct.; her grandson Joshua Sunn and his fiancé Crystal Williams and their children Trevor and Alex Sunn and Blake Williams of White River Jct.; her granddaughter Amy Leavitt and her children Logan and Mackenzy Carrier of West Lebanon; her grandson Eric Leavitt of Lebanon and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct. Wednesday March 30th from 6-8PM. A private burial will take place later in the Spring at the convenience of the family in the Hillside Cemetery in Norwich, VT.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Rutland County Humane Society, 769 Stevens Road, Pittsford, VT 05763
