CHESTER, VT
Dorothy H. Cook, 92, a longtime resident of Chester, passed away Tuesday morning, January 2, at the Gill Odd Fellows Home in Ludlow.
She was born May 29, 1925 in Bellows Falls, VT the daughter of Henry and Gladys (Ploof) Houghton. She received her schooling in Springfield and Chester and graduated from Chester High School in 1943. She married N. Paul Howe in Chester in 1944. She greatly enjoyed raising her family. Mr. Howe passed away in 1966. She married Winston Cook in Chester in 1976. Dorothy attended the Thompson School of Nursing and was employed at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Bellows Falls as a LPN for sixteen years until her retirement. Mr. Cook passed away in 1998.
Mrs. Cook was an active member of the Chester Baptist Church where she served as treasurer and was on the Board of Trustees. She was also a member of the Chester Seniors Association. She loved knitting and had made many pairs of booties and mittens, giving them to the Springfield Hospital and to her family and many friends. She was an avid reader and a true fan of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics and the New England Patriots.
She was predeceased by her parents, both husbands, one son, Benjamin Howe, and by three brothers, Carl, Frank and Raymond Houghton and one sister, Ruth Stearns.
Survivors include one daughter, Becky R. Howe of Brownsville, VT, one son, Russell P. Howe and his wife, Elaine of Hubbardton, VT, three grandchildren, Stacey Wiggins of New Smyrna, FL, Christopher Howe of Pittsford, VT and William Klotz of Buckfield, ME, seven great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
A memorial graveside service will be held in the spring at the family lot in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Chester.
