NORWICH, VT. -- Dorothy Q. Barnes, 97, of Norwich, passed away after a long illness on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at the Brookside Nursing Home of White River Junction, Vt. She was born in East Hampton, Ma., on Dec. 7, 1915, daughter of John Quitek and Catherine Manix Quitek.
Dorothy lived in Hamden, Ct., for 60 years, then in Homestead, Fl, for
11 years, Storrs, Ct for 6 years, before moving to Norwich in 1994.
Dorothy was primarily a homemaker but worked for a time for the Mt.
Carmel, Ct., School. She was a volunteer for the New Haven, Ct., Red Cross for 24 years. She greatly enjoyed golfing and was a club champion for six years at the Laurel View Country Club in Hamden. One golfing highlight was her hole-in-one on another Connecticut course on May 8, 1990.
She is survived by her son John R. Barnes and his wife Shirley Barnes of Otisfield, ME, a son-in-law George Clark of Norwich, grandchildren Steven Barnes and his wife Diane of Boylston, MA, Lori Barnes Grippo and her husband Carmine of Burnt Hills, NY, and Kevin Clark of Portland, OR, greatgrandchildren Courtney and Brittany Grippo of Burnt Hills, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Rexford D. Barnes, by her daughter Nancy Barnes Clark, and by three sisters Helen Meszaros, Mae Denison, and Catherine Cummings.
At Dorothy's request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. A gathering of family and close friends is planned at a later time.
