Wilder, VT - Doris G. Powden, 91, died Wednesday morning, October 24, 2018 at Valley Terrace in Wilder.
She was born March 8, 1927 in New York City the daughter of Otto and Mary (Cunniff) Galle. Doris grew up in Westwood, MA and graduated from Westwood High School in 1944. She married Charles G. Powden December 29, 1948 in Bristol, NH. The couple moved to White River Jct soon after where in addition to raising seven children, Mrs. Powden worked with her husband in their jewelry store. Following their retirement in 1984 they moved into their cottage in Bristol; NH and traveled in their motorhome during the winters. In 1989 they began spending winters in Zolfo Springs, FL.
When they had their motorhome they were very active in the Family Motorcoach Association and helped to organize the Green Mountain Chapter. Doris was a member of St. Timothy's Church in Bristol, NH and when living in White River Jct was a member of St. Anthony's Church. At St. Anthony's she was one of the first eucharistic ministers, served on the Parish Council and was a member of the Altar Society. She was also a former member of the Wilder Women's Club, and a past secretary of the Wilder PTA.
She leaves six sons, Charles O. Powden of Hinesburg, VT, Michael D. Powden of Mooresville, NC, Robert W. Powden of Jacksonville, FL, Christopher A. Powden of Goffstown, NH, Thomas A. Powden of Groton, CT, Timothy P. Powden of South Londonderry, VT, a daughter, Mary Margaret Hitchcock of Wilder, VT, fifteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct. Sunday October 28 th from 6-8PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday October 29 th at 1PM at St. Anthony's Church in White River Jct., VT. Private committal will be in the Homeland Cemetery in Bristol, NH at the convenience of the family.
