Wilder, VT- Doris Brown, 85, a longtime resident of Wilder, VT, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2026, with family by her side.
She was the daughter of Russell, Sr. and Muriel Brown of Barre, VT, and a graduate of Spaulding High School. Doris went on to pursue her calling in healthcare, graduating from the Mary Fletcher School of Nursing at the University of Vermont. She devoted many years of compassionate service as the head psychiatric nurse at the VA Hospital in White River Junction, where she cared deeply for her patients and colleagues alike.
Doris was known for her fierce independence, quiet generosity, charitable spirit, and deep devotion to those she loved. In her later years, she found great comfort and companionship in her beloved cat, Buddy, who remained faithfully by her side.
Doris’s nieces and nephews fondly remember her arriving each Christmas with a trunk load of gifts, bringing joy and excitement to the holiday. Many also cherish memories of her sitting on the big porch in Barre, watching the younger children play in the yard. Her niece Ashley received her very first cat from Aunt Doris, beginning a shared lifelong love of cats. Sara remains deeply grateful for Doris’s wise counsel and steadfast emotional support throughout the years.
She was predeceased by her sister, Martha Colby of Swanzey, New Hampshire.
She is survived by her brother, Russell Brown, and his wife Eva Brown of Williamstown, Vermont.
She is also lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews and their families: RJ Brown and his wife Lyndsi, and their children Zachary and Thomas; Sara Kinsherf and her husband Jeff of Halifax, MA, and Sara’s daughter Ashley McCormick and Michael Cote’ of Manhattan, NY; Orilla Farnham and her husband Edwin of Williamstown, VT, and their daughters Autum and Ahna Taylor, and Autum’s son Leavitt Taylor Jacobs; Robert Colby II of Richmond, NH; Melissa Colby of Plymouth, MA; Kimberly Englert and her husband Eric of Los Angeles, CA; and Kelly Troiano and her husband John of Bedford, NH, and their children Brooke and Paige Letzelter, AJ Troiano, and Chelsea Parker.
Doris will be remembered for her strength, kindness, and unwavering love for her family, and her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
