CORNISH, NH

Donald W. Stammers, 85, a longtime resident of Cornish, passed away Friday morning, June 7 at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor.

He was born May 6, 1934 in Windsor, the son of Cornelius and Lillian (Wentworth) Stammers. He received his schooling in Windsor and graduated from Windsor High School in 1953. He was a veteran of the US Army serving as a MP during the Korean Conflict. He married Ruby Akers on April 13, 1956 at the Presidio in San Francisco. Following his honorable discharge he was employed at Hoover Vacuum in San Jose, CA and later at Beckman Instruments. He later returned to Vermont where he was employed at the former Cone Blanchard Machine Tool Company in Windsor and then at New Jersey Machine in Lebanon. He also worked as a mail handler for the US Postal Service in White River Jct. and most recently as a custodian at the Cornish Elementary School.

He was a member of the VFW in Claremont. Don enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking, slot cars and car racing. He was fond of animals, especially his cats. He was also a diehard Red Sox fan and loved watching baseball.

His wife, Ruby, passed away on April 22 of this year.

He was also predeceased by three brothers, David, Richard and Robert Stammers and by one sister, Dorothy Thompson.

Survivors include two sons, Tim Stammers and his wife, Janine, of Canaan, NH and Tom Stammers of Oregon, one daughter, Sharon LaPlante of Chester, VT, one grandson, one sister, Roberta Stammers and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service for Mr. and Mrs. Stammers will held at a later date in the Ascutney Cemetery in Windsor.
