Obituary

Donald Carpenter Goss of West Lebanon, NH, Canaan, NH and Block Island, RI passed away at age 80 on October 12. He was born on October 22, 1930 in White Plains, NY, resided in Larchmont, NY and on the family farm in Brookline VT. He was educated at Phillips Academy Andover, class of 1949 and Dartmouth College, Class of 1953, having majored in English. He served as a class president. His career was in advertising as a Board member of McCaffrey & McCall Inc., a major New York-based advertising agency. His clients included Mercedes Benz of North America, ABC Network, Pfizer, The Hartford Insurance Co. and Air Canada. As a writer he produced 26 books and numerous magazine articles, opinion pieces, essays and ads. He was a guest lecturer in history and marketing at MIT, St. Johns University, University of Massachusetts among others, and was listed in Who's Who in America. An avid collector of sculpture and oil paintings as well as Standard Gauge Lionel toy trains he was also a dedicated musician who played the organ and the Bach Contralto Trumpet in F. As an athlete he played basketball, golf and tennis. In 1985 Dartmouth College honored him with its Alumni Award. Last month, the college recognized him by placing his portrait in the recently rededicated Class of '53 Commons dining hall with the legend, "The Great Communicator, Unifier, Author and Spiritual Leader." He was predeceased by his parents, Clarence Edward Goss, Dartmouth '23, and Priscilla Carpenter Goss and an infant sister, Diane Goss. He is survived by his wife, the former Lillian Prakelt of Townshend, VT, four children; Diane Catherine Goss Farrell of Washington, DC and Easton, CT, twin sons Jonathan Carpenter Goss, Dartmouth '81, of Jerome, Idaho and Thomas Carpenter Goss of Danville, Vt. and Holly Elizabeth Goss Betts of Westport, CT, as well as six grandchildren, Hilary Ann Farrell , Margaret Carpenter Farrell , Nathaniel Carpenter Goss , Claire Erkins Goss, Ethan Carpenter Goss and Eli Hunkins Goss, and his sister Barbara James Goss Smith of Moscow Mills, MO. plus two 1st cousins, Vaughn Carpenter Brennan of New Orleans, LA. and Marybeth Brennan Scheinbaum of Angel Fire, NM. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to "Donald Carpenter Goss '53, Clarence Edward Goss '23 and Jonathan Carpenter Goss '81 Endowment," an endowment he funded which supports instrumental musicians at Dartmouth College. Gifts may be sent to: Dartmouth College Gift Planning Office, 6066 Development Office, Hanover, NH 03755. A memorial service is planned for mid-November.
