SPRINGFIELD, VT Donald P. Fitzherbert, Sr., 83, a 47 year resident of Springfield, passed away Sunday morning, May 4 at the Cedar Hill Continuing Healthcare Center in Windsor. He was born August 24, 1930 in Standish, ME, the son of Percy and Audrey (Dyer) Fitzherbert. At the age of 17, he entered the military during the Korean Conflict and spent the next 6 years in the U.S. Army, serving a tour in Korea earning the Korean Service Medal W/2 Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal, before his honorable discharge in late 1954. Private Donald P. Fitzherbert had a longtime pen pal, Arline Leskiw during his service time. They were married September 17, 1955 in Eden, NY, and were married for 56 years until her passing in 2011. He was to work 40 plus years as a heavy equipment operator in the construction trade. He was employed at companies such as North Haven Construction of CT., McKenzie Construction of Chester, VT, and retired from Daniels Construction of Weathersfield, VT. Donald enjoyed what he called "Tinkering" on small engines and fabricating gadgets to fix things that needed fixing without needing the right tools to do so. He was also predeceased by his parents and one brother, Vaugn Fitzherbert of Bowling Green, KY. He was very proud of his five children, which include, daughter, Darlene of Weathersfield, VT, four sons, Phillip B. and his wife, Patricia of Loomis, CA, Dewaine R. of Springfield, VT, Donald P. Jr. of Perkinsville, VT and Aaron J. of Weathersfield, VT, three grandchildren, Tanner J. Fitzherbert of Weathersfield, VT, Bryan W. Fitzherbert of Anderson, CA and Jillian E. Fitzherbert of Hastings, NE, one brother, Fay (Babe) Fitzherbert of Mars Hill ME, and a sister Carolyn Maki and her husband, Don of CT, aunts and uncles spread over the miles from Maine to Connecticut, many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Saturday evening, May 17 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor, VT. A graveside service will be held Sunday, May 18 at 4:00 PM in the Ascutneyville Cemetery in Ascutney, VT.
