Enfield, NH – David Charles Smith, 63, died peacefully Friday March 8th, surrounded by family and friends at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.
David was born April 29, 1955 in Bellows Falls, VT the son of Alton and Theresa (Gaylor) Smith. He grew up in White River Jct., VT and graduated from Hartford High School in 1973. Shortly after graduation he started his long and successful career at Daniels Moving and Storage. He eventually purchased it, owning and operating it for over 30 years. Until the
mid-nineties, David was very involved in auto racing. He was a regular at several of the regional speedways, Claremont, Canaan, and Bradford racetracks. His talent and his dedication took him south where he worked as a spotter for the Derrick Cope team and drove their race car haulers on the NASCAR circuit between races nationwide, while still operating his Moving business here in the Upper Valley.
Two of his other major enjoyments were hunting and boating. David was an avid hunter. He enjoyed hunting not just for the harvest, but for the challenge and enjoyment of being outdoors and being with his friends Pete, Dan, Heidi, Sherilyn, Chris and Thom in addition to his family.
David also loved being on the water. He earned his Captain's license which he was very proud of. He spent time on Lake Champlain, the Connecticut River, Mascoma and Sunapee lakes. He also navigated two trips along the Erie Canal. Island Pond VT also held a special place in Dave's heart.
He was an active member of the Lebanon Kiwanis Club and the Hartford and Lebanon Elks Lodge.
He is survived by his fiancee, and partner of seven years, Marianne Densmore of Enfield, NH, two daughters, Jessica J. Gramling and her husband Corey, of White River Jct., VT, Sarah E. Smith of West Lebanon, NH, and three sons; Travis D. Smith of Canaan, NH, Kyle K. Smith and his wife Elizabeth, of Windsor VT, Lee W. Densmore of Enfield, NH.
He was also survived by nine grandchildren, the joys of his life; Maddi, Colin, Alayna, Aiden, Hunter, Emerson, Louise, Levi and Hazel. He was predeceased by Grandson Carson. He was also survived by brothers Stephen Smith of Leesburg Florida, Bryan Smith Florida, Kirk Smith, Old Orchard Beach Maine and one remaining Uncle, Bill and his wife Aunt Nina of Hudson MA., as well numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours will be held Wednesday March 20th 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., VT. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at the funeral home the following day, March 21st at 1:00pm followed by a reception at the Elks Lodge in Lebanon, NH.
