IN LOVING MEMORY OF
David R
Munro
November 12, 1936 – June 26, 2019
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VT: Fair winds and following seas to David R. Munro,82, who died on June 26th. He was surrounded by the caring nursing team at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital and his wife and daughter as his sparkling blue eyes closed for the last time.
Son of Lawrence and Dorothy Munro, Dave spent his early years in Medford and Boston, Massachusetts and with festive summers in York, Maine. He earned a music scholarship to Valley Forge Military Academy which fueled his love of military bands and parades. He continued to perform in the Boston University ROTC band as an undergraduate in Business Administration. As he began his Navy career, he met and married his wife of 56 years, Sally, in their beloved town of York.
Dave's Navy career took him to the Caribbean and Mediterranean as he served as Navigation Line Officer and Supply Corps Officer. He and Sally raised their three daughters along the eastern seaboard from Georgia to Rhode Island. He is survived by: wife Sara J. (Sally) Munro; daughters Heather Munro Prescott (Chris Armen) of Collinsville, CT, Hope Munro of Chico, CA, and Sara R. Munro of Burlington, VT; sister Carol Perkins (Bruce Perkins) of Duxbury, MA; and dozens of nieces and nephews spread across the U.S.
After his military service, the family settled into White River Junction where community and civic engagement were equally important as careers. Dave worked at Dartmouth College's Purchasing Department for 18 years with a brief year at Penn State that made him a Nitty Lion football fan for life. Even after he retired in 2000, he continued to volunteer with the New England Association of Educational Buyers to advance the profession and his core values of integrity and service. He was honored with the Jake E. Bishop Meritorious Service Award for his leadership and dedication to higher education in 2011.
Outside the office, Dave was present at nearly every one of his daughters' sporting events. He was seated center row at choir and band concerts at Hartford High School. And he celebrated their many degrees and professional successes. He was elected Justice of the Peace and Trustee of Public Funds and re-elected many times as Auditor for the Town of Harford.
Dave's most significant volunteerism was with Visiting Nurse and Hospice of Vermont and New Hampshire for more than 40 years. He and Sally met with others in farmhouses, church basements, and even their own living room to organize the first home health services in White River that eventually spread to all of the Upper Valley. He was ever present on the Governance Committee to help guide the organization's growth, recruit leadership, and ensure staff nurses and home health aides had the support they needed to provide the best care to community members. Dave served as Board President four times and only took breaks from the board (yet remained on committees) as outlined in the by-laws that he had a hand in writing. As one former CEO described, "Dave guided us with gentle wisdom and good humor" through each
stage of growth to the eventual affiliation with Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in his final year of service.
Relaxation came for Dave in books. He is remembered fondly by the circulation desk at Howe Library as knowing more about recent releases than they did. He and Sally were avid women's college basketball fans and were most welcomed courtside at Dartmouth, especially when they brought home baked goods. After the extensive travel with the Navy, Dave's most favorite spot was the family's cottage in York, Maine where all chuckled at his daily "task" of watching the tide rise and fall.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 29, 2019 at 11 am at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, 749 Hartford Avenue, White River Junction, VT. Burial will be in the fall at the Vermont Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center, VT. Arrangements and more details are available through Knight's Funeral Home, www.knightfuneralhomes.com/
