WINDSOR, VT
David A. Griswold, Sr., 85, a longtime resident of Windsor passed away peacefully Monday morning, June 11 at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center following a short illness.
He was born January 20, 1927 in Norwich, VT a son of Clifford A. and Beatrice (Tobin) Griswold. He has resided in Windsor his entire adult life.
He received his schooling through the Hanover school system. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the US Army Ski Patrol. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Windsor. He married Maxine Durphey in Claremont, NH on July 6, 1954. He worked as a Ford mechanic at the Ford Garage in Claremont, NH for fifteen years. He was later employed as a mechanic at the former Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Windsor for twenty three years. Upon the closing of the Goodyear Plant, David became the property manager for seven years, working for the Connecticut River Development Corporation. He also drove school bus for the Windsor School District.
One of his greatest passions was working on racecars. He was Donnie Miller's mechanic for several years at the Claremont Speedway. He was also the proud sponsor of Pop G Motorsports.
David loved NASCAR, gardening, cooking, his dog Daizie and most of all dancing with his wife, especially the polka. He loved taking family vacations to Newfound Lake, the coast of Maine and Florida.
He was known by many things during his life; husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, neighbor, friend and "Boss" by his children.
Mr. Griswold's loyalty was unbreakable and his integrity unshakeable. He had the voice of thunder, the grip of a bear and the heart of an angel. He was everybody's Grandpa.
Survivors include his loving wife of fifty eight years, Maxine Griswold of Windsor, and his children, Linda Richardson of Windsor, David Griswold of Hartland, Donald Griswold of Hartland, Denis Griswold of Peabody, MA, Lisa Griswold of Norwich, Lori Parent of Brownsville and Leanna Tomlinson of Bradford, VT, eleven grandchildren, Marcy, Keith, Lindsey, Garrett, Arianna, Olivia, Zoe, Elissa, Kathleen, Andrew and Hayden, two great grandchildren, Taylor and Hallie, three sisters, Betty Abbot, Ellen Paterson, Anna Daniels, three brothers, Clifford "Mickey", James and Daniel, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, Donald.
His family wishes to thank the neuroscience unit at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH and the staff at Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center for their care, understanding and professionalism in making the difficult moments endurable and giving David dignity in his final days.
Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor on Thursday evening, June 14 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
The funeral service will be held Friday, June 15 at 11:00 AM at the Rachel S. Harlow United Methodist Church in Windsor with the Rev. Ken White, Pastor, officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow at the Windsor Elks Lodge. Committal services will be held at the convenience of his family at a later date in the Hilltop Cemetery in Quechee.
