IN LOVING MEMORY OF
David J.
Bucci
November 28, 1968 – October 15, 2019
Norwich, VT - David J. Bucci, 50, died Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at his home.
Dave loved his family above all else. While teaching at the University of Vermont, Dave met his wife-to-be Catherine "Katie" Hancur. They married in Jamestown, RI on July 19, 2003, and moved to the Upper Valley soon after. In 2004, Dave and Katie Bucci welcomed their first child, Joshua David. Ava Catherine followed in 2006; Lila Maria-Terese in 2009. Dave cherished many family activities, especially making music with Katie, skiing on Sunday afternoons with Josh, baking with Ava, riding bicycles with Lila, and anything that included Phoebe, the family dog.
Dave's love for family extended to the community. He had a gift for making sure his children's friends felt seen, heard, and special. He was generous with warm greetings and smiles, and he often took on unglamorous tasks, such as treasurer for sports teams, with an attitude that he'd learn something while helping others. Dave loved baseball. He was an unwavering fan of the New York Yankees; he also had many strong friendships with those who supported the Boston Red Sox.
Dave was born November 28, 1968 in North Tarrytown, NY and grew up in New Fairfield, CT. He is survived by his father, John Bucci, his mother, Barbara (Miller) Bucci, his brother, Christopher Bucci, and his sister, Cheryl Bucci.
After finishing his undergraduate work at Wesleyan University, Dave went on to earn a Ph.D in neurobiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following postdoctoral work at Brown and three years on the faculty at the University of Vermont, Dave joined the faculty at Dartmouth in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. Dave served as chair of the department from 2016-2019 and was named the Lincoln Filene Professor of Human Relations. He also served in the graduate program in Experimental & Molecular Medicine, the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, and the Center for Technology and Behavioral Health at the Geisel School of Medicine. Beyond Dartmouth, he was an elected Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and the American Psychological Association, and received numerous institutional and national awards for his research, teaching, and mentoring.
A visitation will be held Thursday, October 24, 2019 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction, VT. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 am on Friday, October 25 at Saint Denis Church in Hanover, NH. A celebration of Dave's life will immediately follow at Alumni Hall on Dartmouth's campus.
