Hanover, NH - Daniel Herbert Josephthal, 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 11, 2024, with his children at his side in Hanover, NH. Dan was born on January 14, 1935, in Brooklyn, NY to Albert and Rose Josephthal. He attended an experimental elementary school run by Hunter College and the Bronx High School of Science. He obtained a B.A. from Wesleyan University, where he developed an interest in psychology, which ultimately led to his becoming a psychoanalyst. While at The University of Rochester School of Medicine, he met and married Ada Thompson, who at the time was a high school English teacher and obtaining a Master's degree in English literature. After completing his psychoanalytic training at the Washington Psychoanalytic Institute, he moved to Charlottesville, VA. He lived on a farm with horses and cattle, which Ada managed while Dan started a private practice in psychiatry and psychoanalysis. Dan has said that raising four children on the farm were "the best years of my life." In 2018, he retired and moved to Hanover where his youngest daughter resides. He is survived by his daughters Meg Haensel and husband Curt, of Charlottesville, Amy Fleischer and husband Chip, of Hanover, and son David Josephthal and wife Amy, of Millersburg, IN, as well as 8 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Laura Kavanaugh, of Roanoke, VA and his wife Ada. A memorial service will be held in the Gathering Room at Kendal in Hanover at 3:30pm on Wednesday, February 14. Donations in his memory are encouraged to High Horses Center for Equine Assisted Services in Sharon, VT.
