WINDSOR, VT
Crofter E. Cummings, 94, a longtime resident of Windsor, passed away Wednesday morning, February 17 at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor.
He was born August 15, 1921 in Claremont, NH the son of Harley F. and Beatrice (Sherwin) Cummings. He received his schooling in Windsor and graduated from Windsor High School in 1939. He was briefly employed at the former Cone Automatic Machine Tool Company in Windsor until entering the service. He was a veteran of the US Army serving during World War II stationed in Europe. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Vermont. He attended the University of Vermont under the GI Bill where he earned his Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering. He married Helen Gatos in Manchester, NH on April 28, 1957. They resided in New Jersey where Crofter was employed at Bell Labs and later at Lockheed until his retirement in 1975. They then moved to Windsor. He was a longtime member of the Old South Congregational Church, where he enjoyed music and played his saxophone. He also taught Sunday school and Bible study. He was an avid hiker, and enjoyed gardening, snowshoeing and cross country skiing and was a member of the Ascutney Trails Association. His wife Helen passed away in 1999.
He was also predeceased by his parents, and one brother, Ervin Cummings in 1983
Survivors include one son, Daniel H. Cummings and his wife, Mary Ann and one granddaughter, Emily Cummings, all of North Andover, MA, three nieces and several great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Sunday, February 21 from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor. The funeral service with be held Monday, February 22 at 1:00 PM at the Old South Congregational Church in Windsor. A reception for family and friends will follow in the church hall. Committal services with military honors will be held Tuesday, May 24 at 1:00 PM in the Ascutney Cemetery in Windsor.
